CONTACT Advocates are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support survivors and their families and friends during a visit to the emergency room for a medical examination and evidence collection process. Medical personnel at emergency rooms in Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Logan Regional Medical Center, and Rivers Health (formerly Pleasant Valley Hospital) should offer to contact an advocate on a survivor’s behalf. If that option is not presented, the survivor may also request one by calling the hotline.

A Hospital Advocate Will:

  • Believe you and offer support
  • Give you information about your rights
  • Make sure your rights are respected
  • Provide answers to your questions
  • Help communicate with medical staff, law enforcement, and others – with your permission
  • Provide support and referrals to your family and friends.
  • Stay with you at the hospital

A Hospital Advocate Will Not:

  • Make your decisions for you
  • Give medical advice
  • Give legal advice
  • Do anything on your behalf without your permission
  • Release any information about you or your situation without your permission

If You Are Considering Seeking Medical Care:

Not all injuries may be visible.

You can request a forensic medical examination to collect potential evidence within 96 hours of the assault.

If the assault was recent, you can preserve the evidence by not changing clothing, showering, urinating, brushing your hair or teeth, or touching anything where the assault occurred.

You can have a forensic medical exam even if you do not report the crime to law enforcement.

If you are under 18, medical staff and advocates are required to report the crime.
