SUMMARY:Denim Day
DESCRIPTION:The Denim Day story begins in Italy in 1992\, when an 18-year old girl was raped by the 45-year old driving instructor who was taking her to her very first driving lesson.She reported the assault\, and the perpetrator was arrested and prosecuted. He was then convicted and sentenced to jail. \nYears later\, he appealed the conviction claiming that they had consensual sex. The Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction\, and the perpetrator was released.A statement from the Court argued that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans\, she had to help him remove them. By removing the jeans\, it was not rape but consensual sex. This became known throughout Italy as the “jeans alibi.”Enraged by the verdict\, the women in the Italian Parliament staged a protest on the steps of the Supreme Court\, wearing jeans. This protest was picked up by international media\, which inspired the California Senate and Assembly to do the same on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento. Patti Occhiuzzo Giggans\, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence\, saw this in the media and thought everyone should be wearing jeans to protest all of the myths about why women and girls are attacked. Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA event was held in April of 1999\, and has continued annually since.April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. (now forming) event. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe will be assembling Beloved Bundles (clothing and personal hygiene items) for the CONTACT Rape Crisis Center in Huntington on Tuesday\, April 28th\, at 5:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church at 520 11th Street\, Huntington\, WV 25701. Light snacks will be provided. \n\n\n\n\nBeloved Bundles are given to survivors of sexual assault following a forensic exam where their clothing is seized for evidence. All of the items for the Bundles are donated by Project Beloved. \nBefore assembling the Bundles and to highlight April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, we will also have a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) share her insights on the role of the Nurse Examiner and the prevalence of sexual assault in the Huntington area. \nPlease RSVP below.

We started as a suicide hotline spearheaded by a group of churches in downtown Huntington. Today\, we are a standalone rape crisis center that served over 900 survivors of sexual violence\, sex trafficking\, and stalking in 2024 across six counties in southwestern West Virginia. \nWe invite you to ensure those in crisis are never alone by attending our fundraiser. On June 7 at 10:30am\, La Famiglia will cater a birthday party in the ballroom of Trinity Episcopal Church on 5th Ave in Huntington.  \nIt will be a time of celebration and renewed commitment to our mission. \nFor half a century\, an untold number of volunteers\, board members\, and donors have made this difficult work possible. In 2024\, our advocates helped 949 victims (up from 828 in 2023)\, that number includes 359 children (up from 305 in 2023). \nSponsored by Simplicities and Marshall Health Network.
